Defender escaping and Taekwon-Do

I've been practicing lacrosse with my mom, and now I'm into getting past defenders. I've been practicing to be an attacker, and I've been reading a great book called Winning Women's Lacrosse by Kelly Amonte Hiller. I'm not so good at escaping defenders yet, but I'll practice! At least I can catch, throw, and scoop up a ball off the grass pretty decently now. Everytime I read about how to trick your defender to get past her, I keep thinking of how I can translate it into Taekwon-Do sparring. It's neat because Taekwon-Do helped me become a good athlete for lacrosse, and lacrosse helps me think about Taekwon-Do sparring tricks!

I went to a Taekwon-Do class yesterday. I got to spar some great, challanging black belts. My biggest challange was actually from a 1st dan girl three years younger than me! She was good at sparring and kept pelting me with punches, constantly moving forward. I kept turning my back. My biggest weakness in sparring is that I'm bad at sparring people who always 'come in' on me. I always turn my head, or my back, too! Luckily this time I was able to think to do a few reverse hook kicks, but I still did not do so well in sparring. But I've never been happier to do bad in sparring in my life! I have the perfect opponent: the exact sparring style image of the person I can't beat! Yet. I'll keep trying so that I will be able to spar anyone I want to and do a good job.

Also, I wrote an article about mindset for competition, and it was accepted into Totally TKD Magazine! (www.totallytkd.com) it will probably be avaliable to read in the October issue.
